About the Artwork

In this centerfold for Puck, an old hag sits atop a ticker tape machine that rises from the flames of “inside information.” Spewing false financial news, she sows chaos in the market. Threads of ticker tape reading “According to report…” and “It is claimed…” swirl out to entangle investors. The caption reads: “DAME RUMOR. The Witch of Wall Street.”

Known for its colorful cartoons and caricatures, Puck was America’s first successful humor magazine. The artist, Udo Keppler, was the son of the magazine’s founder, Joseph Keppler. He would go on to become co-owner after his father’s death, changing his name to Joseph Keppler, Jr.
