"Van Der Meer follows in the tradition of great Dutch landscape painters, but instead of those charming genre pictures from the seventeenth century that show crowds skating and generally enjoying themselves on frozen canals and rivers, we are given muddy fields and mightily striving, often overweight and overage footballers...But in the end--however sardonic the title--Hollandse Velden is a landscape book. The Northern painters of Flanders and Holland began the tradition of landscape painting in the religious images of the Crucifixion, Annunciation and Nativity, where great attention and evident love was given to the landscapes in the background. So it is with Van Der Meer. The footballers take the place of the Madonna, the shepherds and the Magi, observed with skill, with and warmth, but it is to the landscape that we are ultimately drawn--flat, grey, unexceptional, but eternally fascinating."--Parr & Badger
