Thirteen geometric applique blocks on point form the field, surrounded by a continuous bias vine and bud border. The fabrics are Turkey red, two-step green ( which is now several shades of green) and pale yellow. All stitching is by hand. The quilt dates 1850-1870. Very closely spaced, excellent hand quilting averages 8 stitches to the inch (measured on the top only) through a thin cotton batt and includes plumes, grids and stippled baskets. The narrow binding is a light two- step green cotton. Condition: this quilt shows both wear and damage. There are several holes and tears around the borders ( see photos), with some loss of fabric. Many of the appliqués themselves show wear and fabric loss. This is typical of Turkey red cotton, as the dye process renders it more fragile. The green fabrics also show a lot of wear. The white is intact except for the areas of damage mentioned. PLEASE SEE PHOTOS! This has been a spectacular quilt and is still worthy of adding to a collection and perhaps copying, as the geometric shapes of the appliquéd flowers are easier to sew than more curvilinear shapes.
