The SciSys Rapier is a vintage, battery-operated compact chess computer released in 1984 by SciSys (which later became Saitek) and programmed by Julio Kaplan. Unlike traditional sensory boards, it features a separate physical chessboard where a slim, calculator-like computing unit with a 15-key keypad and a 4-digit LCD screen snaps into the side.
Key Specifications & Features:-
Processor & Memory:-
Built around a 4-bit "all-in-one" integrated circuit (IC 44868A04) featuring 128 bytes of RAM and 5K of ROM. 😲 😂
Playing Strength: Estimated around 1134 Elo (hobby/beginner standard).
Difficulty Levels: 8 distinct levels ranging from fast responses (3 seconds) to infinite analysis time.
Power Supply: Powered by a single long-lasting lithium coin cell battery (CR2032) providing roughly 150 hours of play time.
Memory Function: Features an "ON/MEMORY" switch that retains your game position for a long duration even when powered down, making it an early portable travel set.
Gameplay: Moves are entered via coordinate keys on the keypad and displayed on the LCD screen. Because it lacks automatic sensory pressure detection on the board squares, it requires a manual entry approach similar to pocket chess units of the 1980s.
I started with a Mephisto II chess computer in 1981 which was similar in usage to this SciSys Rapier from 1984, this is a great little machine for those who like me lived through this early period in the '80's and have nostalgia for these old chess computers which we can actually beat sometimes compared to today's programs which no human can beat including world champion Magnus Carlsen!
I am selling it with a low starting price of just £5 with no reserve and just postage to add which as it is a small parcel will be inexpensive.
Being sold as described with no return.
These old chess machines are becoming more scarce so place a bid and pick up a fun bargain!
Thanks for looking.
