Original WWII Japanese-language surrender leaflet, identified as 154-J-1.

This leaflet was produced at the very end of World War II to inform Japanese military personnel that Japan had surrendered.

The front translates approximately to:

Regarding the Imperial General Headquarters Proclamation Concerning Surrender.”

The reverse is addressed to Japanese officers and enlisted men and discusses Japan’s formal surrender, including the September 2, 1945 surrender aboard the USS Missouri, and instructions for Japanese forces to cease resistance and surrender to Allied forces.

it says, in modern English:

On September 2, Japanese government representative Foreign Minister Shigemitsu and Imperial General Headquarters representative Chief of the General Staff Umezu signed the surrender aboard the American battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay.

In accordance with the terms of surrender, Article 4 of Proclamation No. 1 issued by Japanese Imperial General Headquarters states:

“Commanders under Imperial General Headquarters, and all Japanese land, air and naval forces and auxiliary forces in the Japanese home islands and adjacent small islands, Korea south of 38 degrees north latitude, and the Philippine Islands, shall surrender to the Commander of the United States Army Forces in the Pacific.”

At present, soldiers on the various battlefronts are surrendering to the nearest Allied forces.

In order that your unit may surrender in an orderly manner while preserving the honor and dignity of soldiers, promptly send an envoy to the American positions.

The lower corner is marked 154-J-1, a U.S. psychological-warfare leaflet designation associated with surrender messaging directed toward isolated Japanese troops.
