The Martin Custom Shop creates the ultimate guitars through exceptional skill and extensive experience. Manufactured in a completely different environment and process than the regular line, it occupies a dedicated area within the factory, where traditional methods are preserved while maintaining even higher precision.
This top-tier division produces the Authentic series, considered the pinnacle of the lineup, as well as custom models boasting exceptional craftsmanship. This particular instrument is a 1998 used "O-18 Custom," retaining the sound of the 18 while changing the rosette and fretboard inlays to the 28 style.
The O model has a long history, starting in 1898, with its current style established in the 1930s. It's a more compact version of the OO size, characterized by a slightly thicker body compared to the OO and OOO models.
Spruce top, mahogany sides & back, mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard & bridge, original rotomatic chrome tuners, mother-of-pearl fingerboard dots (28 style), old decal logo, 28 style rosette, SQ truss rod, 42.9mm nut width, non-scalloped X bracing. The pickguard has been replaced with a slightly oversized tortoiseshell one.
The SQ truss rod and full thickness neck shape have a slightly high apex but a deep bend, giving it a comfortable, not-too-thick feel. The saddle is a short saddle as is typical of the Standard Series, and it is highly expandable for the installation of pickups and other components.
The compact size makes it easy to hold, and the body has excellent attack. It has a crisp, lively sound with a traditional, punchy, dry tone.
It responds well to delicate touches, and the voluminous Martin sound, even with a relaxed touch, is truly of Custom Shop quality. There are traces of binding repair at the constricted area of the back binding on the 1st string side, and slight paint chips were present where the binding had peeled off.
Currently, the peeling has been properly repaired. While there are some thin paint chips along the binding due to age, small dents in the paint surface on the body pickguard, and other minor scratches, it remains in beautiful condition considering its approximately 30 years of age.
The neck offers excellent playability, and its compact size makes it easy to hold, handle, and play with a light touch. From stylish traditional rag to arpeggios and even punchy strumming, this instrument responds comfortably to a variety of styles without any strain.
A guitar you can cherish for years to come. Original hard case included.
