This card features Sir John Monash, considered the greatest military commander in Australian history and one of the most brilliant and innovative generals who fought in World War I. Following his remarkable achievements, he was knighted by King George V on the battlefield itself - the first time in about 200 years that a British monarch bestowed this title upon a commander in the field. After the war, he directed the State Electricity Commission of Victoria and served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne. He was very proud of his Judaism and headed the Jewish community in Australia, with his magnificent personality greatly helping to reduce antisemitism in the country. Named after him are the famous Monash University, the city of Monash, and his portrait even appears on the Australian 100 dollar banknote.
