A three-coin bundle of genuine UK commemorative £2 coins issued as part of The Royal Mint’s programme marking the centenary of the First World War.
This listing contains three consecutive First World War £2 designs from 2014, 2015 and 2016, commemorating the outbreak of the conflict, the contribution of the Royal Navy and the role of the British Army.
2014 First World War Outbreak £2
The first coin in The Royal Mint’s five-year First World War centenary programme was released in 2014, marking 100 years since the outbreak of the conflict.
Designed by John Bergdahl, the reverse features the instantly recognisable image of Lord Kitchener pointing towards the viewer alongside the words YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU, inspired by the famous First World War recruitment campaign.
2015 First World War Royal Navy £2
The second coin in this bundle commemorates the contribution of the Royal Navy during the First World War.
Designed by military artist David Rowlands, its detailed reverse depicts a First World War battleship and recognises the Navy’s vital role in protecting trade routes, maintaining blockades and defending Britain at sea. The edge inscription reads THE SURE SHIELD OF BRITAIN.
Only 650,000 of the 2015 Royal Navy £2 entered circulation, placing it among the scarcer circulating £2 designs from Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.
2016 First World War Army £2
The 2016 design commemorates the role of the British Army and the enormous recruitment effort during the First World War.
Its design by Tim Sharp depicts the profiles of soldiers standing shoulder to shoulder, reflecting the camaraderie associated with the Pals Battalions, where friends, neighbours and colleagues volunteered to serve together.
The edge inscription reads FOR KING AND COUNTRY. (Royal Mint)
Together, the three coins form an excellent consecutive collection covering the first three years of The Royal Mint’s First World War centenary programme.
