Legend has it, among other speculations, that the P-Funk cornerstone album Maggot Brain was named that way as a means to process a terrible trauma. That was, the death of a loved one, by leading man George Clinton: he is said to have discovered his brother's overdosed dead body in a New Jersey apartment, his skull rotted through. Music is one of the best remedies for unfathomable shocks like this, and this relatively free-structured record is about as cathartic as one could imagine in such wakes (though the rumour isn't confirmed). From the karmic gospel funk of 'Can You Get To That' to the fuzzing, Floydian guitar stretches of the opening track, it's a shocker it wasn't received by the press as an album-of-the-decade upon first release, but that's critical resistance-to-change for you.
