About Maneki Neko & Design Symbolism
Maneki neko, or “beckoning cats,” are traditional Japanese good-luck figures commonly displayed in homes, shops, and businesses. They are associated with prosperity, good fortune, and welcoming favorable opportunities. A maneki neko raising its right paw is traditionally associated with attracting wealth and financial good fortune, while a raised left paw is more commonly associated with attracting people or customers.

This Kutani ware figure features the 宝文 (Takaramon, “Treasure Motifs”) design, which incorporates traditional auspicious symbols associated with prosperity and abundance. The prominent motif on the body is an uchide no kozuchi (打ち出の小槌), or “treasure mallet,” a magical mallet associated with Daikokuten, one of Japan’s Seven Lucky Gods. In Japanese folklore, the mallet is said to produce treasures when shaken and is therefore a symbol of wealth, abundance, and good fortune.

The character 福 (fuku) displayed on the chest means good fortune, happiness, or blessing, while 招福 (shōfuku) on the raised paw means “inviting good fortune.” Together with the raised right paw and treasure-mallet motif, the design strongly emphasizes prosperity and auspicious fortune.

The figure is decorated in the bold multicolor style characteristic of Kutani ware, with raised details that give the painted decoration a textured, dimensional appearance.
