Bullock examines Voorhis’s political idealism, Christian Social Gospel beliefs, New Deal-era career, cooperative movement work, and battles over domestic and foreign policy. The book also provides an important account of Nixon’s first congressional campaign and discusses figures including Franklin D. Roosevelt and Upton Sinclair.

The author personally participated in Voorhis’s campaigns from 1938 through the historic 1946 race against Nixon.
