The Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO) was formed on January 3, 1966, through the merger of Atlantic Refining Company (est. 1865 in Philadelphia) and Richfield Oil Corporation (est. 1911 in California). Under CEO Robert O. Anderson, the company became a major energy player, notably discovering oil at Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, in 1968 and developing the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, which opened in 1977.
In 1969, ARCO acquired Sinclair Oil Corporation, merging its service brands into the single ARCO brand. The company also expanded into mining via the acquisition of Anaconda Copper in 1977 and operated ARCO Chemical as a subsidiary. Headquartered in Los Angeles by the early 1970s, ARCO was one of the world's largest oil companies until it was acquired by BP Amoco (now BP PLC) in 2000 for approximately $26.8 billion.
