🌟RARE Richardson Attr Stourbridge Engraved Water Goblet 4-Rod Twist c1870 - 7 5/8”
A magnificent large Victorian water goblet, attributed to W. H., B. & J. Richardson of Stourbridge and dating to circa 1870–1880.
The finely proportioned bowl is decorated with an exceptionally intricate frosted engraving of interlocking geometric strapwork, polished oval motifs and numerous tiny starbursts. Vertical panel cutting beneath the decoration draws the eye towards the stem and gives the crystal tremendous brilliance.
Its most remarkable feature is the separately applied stem, formed from four solid glass rods skilfully fused and twisted into a rope or cable formation. The rods continue neatly into the underside of the bowl, where they create a small four-petalled rosette when viewed from within.
The broad circular foot is finished with a deeply cut multi-point starburst. The goblet has superb clarity and produces an extraordinarily pure, sonorous ring lasting approximately ten seconds—qualities consistent with fine lead crystal.
The sophisticated geometric engraving, proportions and quality of workmanship compare closely with documented Richardson glass of the period. As the goblet is unmarked, the attribution is offered on stylistic grounds.
A scarce and highly accomplished example of nineteenth-century Stourbridge glassmaking, combining exceptional engraving with an unusually elaborate four-rod twist stem.
The accompanying video captures its exceptionally clear, sonorous bell-like ring, which resonates beautifully and sustains for 8-9 seconds.

PLEASE READ BEFORE PURCHASING
I believe that honesty is the best policy, and I strive to describe every item to the best of my knowledge and belief. All photographs are of the actual item being offered for sale and form an important part of the description.
The majority of my items are vintage or antique, not new. As such, they should be expected to show signs of age and use appropriate to their years. Minor wear, surface marks, rubbing to gilding and other age-related characteristics are entirely consistent with genuine period pieces and should not be regarded as faults.
Any significant defects, such as chips, cracks, repairs, losses or other condition issues beyond normal age-related wear, will always be clearly described and illustrated in the photographs. If you would like further information or additional images, please do not hesitate to ask before purchasing.
I thoroughly research every item and share my findings as accurately as possible. Antique research is an ever-evolving field, and opinions can differ. I welcome additional information from fellow collectors and specialists, as there is always something new to learn.
Whilst every effort is made to ensure complete accuracy, it is always possible that I may overlook a minor age-related detail. Naturally occurring manufacturing imperfections, light surface scratches and honest wear acquired through decades of use are all part of an item’s history and character.
