19TH CENTURY CHINESE NANKING CRACKLE GLAZE WARRIOR VASE

A late 19th century Chinese porcelain vase decorated with a lively continuous battle scene of warriors on foot and horseback.

The figures are painted in coloured enamels carrying swords, spears and other weapons, with mounted warriors and attendants arranged around the body.

The decoration is set against a characteristic cream crackle-glazed ground, with contrasting brown incised bands around the shoulder and foot and a small floral border around the neck.

The underside bears an apocryphal four-character Chenghua mark within a brown square.

This type of polychrome crackle-glazed porcelain is commonly associated with the group known in the Western market as Nanking ware and was produced during the late Qing dynasty.

Very good antique condition.

No chips, cracks or hairlines noted.

There are minor firing imperfections and expected age-related surface wear consistent with its age.
