Published in October of 1922 by The Macmillan Company of New York, Polaris was printed when the world still felt wide and untamed. Before highways stitched the country together. Before television brought the Arctic into living rooms. This was how children — and adults — in the Midwest imagined the North. Through pages like these. Through stories of sled dogs, snowfields, and survival under a pale winter sky that doesn’t feel all that different from a Wisconsin January.

But the real story might be this copy itself. From New York in 1922… to a small school library in Rufus, Oregon… stamped, handled, read, and eventually discarded. Scribbled on by a student who is long grown — maybe long gone. And now here it is, more than 100 years later, still intact. Still standing. A book that has crossed decades, classrooms, and state lines. That kind of travel — that kind of survival — feels very Midwest to me. Practical. Lived-in. Honest.
