Up for sale is a rare, authentic Japanese Samurai Menpo (面頬 / Face Armor Mask) dating back to the Late Edo Period (19th Century). This exceptional piece of samurai defensive armor showcases the meticulous craftsmanship of traditional Japanese armor smiths and represents a captivating era of Japanese martial history.
Design & Key Features
- Detachable Nose Piece (Nose-Reshi): A classic and practical design allowing the samurai to breathe, eat, or speak easily when not in active combat. The nose section attaches securely to the main faceplate via traditional pins.
- Original Real Hair Mustache: The upper lip features a well-preserved, expressive mustache (traditionally made of horsehair or wild boar bristle) designed to give the samurai a fierce, intimidating countenance on the battlefield.
- Ase-Nagashi-No-Ana (Sweat & Saliva Drainage Holes): Features functional ventilation holes at the bottom of the chin and under the ears, designed to drain sweat and prevent rust during extended wear.
- Ori-Kugi (Helmet Cord Hooks): The cheeks are equipped with small metal pegs/hooks to securely anchor the cords (Shinobi-no-o) of the Samurai helmet (Kabuto).
- Yodare-Kake (Throat Guard): Features a matching multi-plate curved throat guard laced with traditional cords, providing essential protection to the neck.
