This is Issue #1128 of the Australian comic series The Phantom, published by Frew Publications on February 16, 1996. Curated by longtime editor Jim Shepherd, this specific 164-page bumper edition was released to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the character (1936–1996).

What makes this issue historic is its presentation of "The Singh Brotherhood". For decades, Australian readers only had access to heavily edited or chopped versions of this adventure. Issue #1128 marked the first time Frew Publications published a completely unedited, fully restored version of the character's definitive debut story. The cover art for this landmark issue was illustrated by Swedish artist Hans Lindahl, adapted directly from the original strip imagery.

The Story & Synopsis

"The Singh Brotherhood" holds monumental status as the very first Phantom story ever written, launching the original daily newspaper strip on February 17, 1936. It establishes the fundamental mythos of "The Ghost Who Walks".

Synopsis: The story introduces Jimmy Wells and his childhood friend, Diana Palmer, a wealthy young socialite whose ship is attacked and terrorized by the notorious Singh Brotherhood—a centuries-old syndicate of brutal, secretive pirates. When Diana is captured, a mysterious costumed avenger known as The Phantom emerges from the jungle to rescue her. Acting as her protector, he wages a one-man war across land and sea against the criminal empire. Over the course of the massive story, The Phantom uncovers their hidden strongholds, faces deadly betrayals, and introduces readers to iconic lore like his skull ring and the deep-jungle hideouts.

Writer & Artist

The Writer: Lee Falk (1911–1999)
Lee Falk was an American writer, theater director, and producer who single-handedly reshaped the golden age of comic strips. At just 21 years old, he created Mandrake the Magician, following it up two years later with The Phantom. Falk wrote virtually every adventure for both characters for over six decades until his passing, captivating a global audience of over 100 million daily newspaper readers. The story was written by Lee Falk and drawn by Ray Moore, with pencils by Falk for the first few weeks.
The Artist: Ray Moore (1905–1984)
While Falk mapped out the initial vision, Ray Moore became the definitive co-creator and first major artist to flesh out the character’s dark, atmospheric world. Moore, who previously worked as an assistant on Falk's Mandrake strip, brought a moody, cinematic, and illustrative ink style to the jungle. His signature artwork established the sleek look of the hero's cowl and mask, defining how generations of fans would visualize the character.

The comic will be sent within the protective comic sleeve and special backing board as shown in the first picture supplied. The comic will be shipped with additional cardboard to protect. The package will have a "Do Not Bend" in red ink stamped on the front and back. This is another classic Phantom comic back issue.

Condition

The comic is complete, looks great and is in the Near Mint - 9.2 condition area. This is a very nice as new looking copy. The comic is bound tight and is not loose in anyway. No coupons have been cut from the comic. The pages are in great shape. There are no news stand pricing stickers, pen marks or date stamps on the covers. Overall this is a complete and nice looking copy that is ready for another read.
