Vintage Chinese Shiwan Pottery Fortune Boy / 招财童子

A large and highly decorative Chinese Shiwan pottery figure depicting a smiling Fortune Boy (Zhaocai Tongzi / 招财童子) carrying an auspicious shoulder pole.

To one side hangs a large Chinese cash coin and associated wealth symbolism, representing prosperity and the wish to attract wealth and good fortune. To the other side is a large vessel filled with peaches, traditionally associated with longevity.

Together the composition combines traditional Chinese wishes for wealth, prosperity and long life.

The figure is boldly modelled with an expressive smiling face and richly glazed robes in deep burgundy, brown, black and cream.

Several impressed and moulded Chinese marks are present to the underside and are shown clearly in the photographs.

Condition:

Overall in very good vintage condition. There is a small chip to the outer edge of the base behind the figure’s left foot, as photographed.

No other chips, cracks or restoration noted.
