The Australian Context and the Birth of Frew (1948)

Australians initially read these serials in newspapers and weekly magazines like the Australian Woman's Mirror. However, keeping track of a story over half a year required immense patience.

In September 1948, Frew Publications was formed in Sydney. Founders Ron Forsyth and Jim Richardson realized that Australian comic book readers wanted immediate gratification—they wanted to read a complete, uninterrupted adventure in one sitting.

The "Cut and Paste" Transformation
To turn a continuous string of thousands of horizontal newspaper panels into a vertical comic book page, Frew had to radically alter the layout:

By the time the comics in your listing were printed in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Frew had perfected this pipeline. They would wait for a US daily or Sunday story arc by Sy Barry or Wilson McCoy to completely finish its run in America, secure the rights, and then package it as a definitive, complete graphic adventure for Aussie fans.

Splicing and Rearranging: Frew's production editors literally cut up proofs of the daily and Sunday strips. They rearranged the panels into a grid format to fit standard comic book pages.

Editing Out Recaps: Because newspaper strips constantly had to remind daily readers what happened the day before, Lee Falk included frequent recap panels or repetitive dialogue. Frew systematically trimmed these out to make the narrative flow seamlessly as a "complete story."

Here is a list of the stories and artists in this lot of great comics.
