PREFACE = It is our intention with this series to increase awareness of the world's many musical origins, a multimedia voyage into one of the human activities which, along with language, has accompanied humankind on their road towards material, mental, and spiritual development. It is easy to see the substantial role music has played in the development of people's relational capacities, in the encounter between the intelligence and spirituality of cultures so different and diverse.

Therefore starting from Africa was the right and natural choice, bearing in mind that it was the cradle of human civilization and an enormous source of the history of humankind, one underestimated and even now little studied and understood. The emotion and faith that grow and vibrate in the listener are the mystery which since time immemorial has given music the power to cure the pains of the soul and the reason why it has always accompanied the divine and invisible, spirits and gods, and humankind's bond to faith and the universe.

The music of Africa reached the New World in the hearts of slaves, like the sweet memory of a wild and maternal land. The most extraordinary fact, however, is that African music became the rhythmic and melodic base of the main genres which, in the twentieth century, have become the music of mass diffusion.

The influence of African music culture is found in many musical genres born from the dramatic voyage of slaves: blues, jazz, rock n' roll,

and many others are examples of one of the greatest musical and cultural revolutions that has ever occurred in the entire story of humankind.

In the contemporary era, magnetic and optical reproduction systems and the media in the form of radio and television have made music a daily and ever-present "commodity." Indeed, we often perceive it as a "noise" instead of a line of communication with the self and the world of the spirit. The therapeutic power of music unfolds in the contemporary era like a kind of "drug" with a role similar to that which it had in the past and which it continues to have in traditional cultures.

Our separation from nature often makes us lose sight of the realm of sound which plays an important role in understanding African vocal techniques, like the forest that accompanies the singing of Pygmies. We have undoubtedly not been immune to the risk of dealing with the musical traditions of Africa from a forma mentis forged by white European culture. Of this we are well aware, but we hope our efforts will contribute to spreading the knowledge and understanding of the rich and diverse music of this continent. Ethnomusicology and anthropology, like medicine and technology, could become widely spread disciplines, as important parts of humans' spiritual culture.

Our hope is that ethnic music will be studied in schools as an important subject, a meta-language for mutually understanding and accepting the differences of all the cultures of the planet.
