Commemorative Stamp for the 150th Anniversary of Kim Koo’s Birth (1876–2026)
To honor the 150th anniversary of the birth of Kim Koo (August 29, 1876), a commemorative stamp has been issued. Kim Koo devoted his entire life to Korea’s independence and peaceful reunification, becoming both a great teacher and a national leader.
As head of the Provisional Government of Korea, he stood at the forefront of the independence movement against Japanese colonial rule, and after liberation he dedicated himself to building a truly independent nation. In his autobiography Baekbeom Ilji, the famous essay My Wish reflects his heartfelt dream that Korea would become a cultural nation bringing happiness to all humanity.
The year 2026 holds special meaning, as UNESCO officially designated it as a “Commemorative Year” recognizing Kim Koo’s vision of peace through culture as a universal value. This designation affirms that his philosophy of “peace through culture” aligns with UNESCO’s core ideals of peace and cultural diversity, providing an opportunity to share his spirit with the world.
The stamp design is based on a photograph of Kim Koo taken in Chongqing, China in 1942. Against a silver background, excerpts from Baekbeom Ilji form a powerful portrait, symbolizing his passionate patriotism and unwavering resolve.
This commemorative stamp serves as a tribute to Kim Koo’s life and ideals, inviting us to reflect on his enduring legacy.
