1850s UNION (THERMOPLASTIC) CASE with The CAPTURE OF MAJOR ANDRE design on the face.
The union case is brown thermoplastic and features the 1770 Capture of Major Andre on the lid (originally painted by Asher B. Durand).
Andre was a British spy during the American Revolution and this case honors the militiamen who caught him. It was a shocking event to many British subjects in America who respected Major Andre.
The interior of the double case holds two copy prints of the Major, one as a young boy and one at his hanging. Glass is intact and both oval gold foil filets and all hinges are perfect. The die engraver was Frederick Goll, the casemaker was Peck and Halverson, and the double case is 4"x 5" (large).
The prints inside are most likely contemporary.
This case is hard to find, especially in such good condition. Very collectible!
Included here is a photo of the 1994 appraisal.
In very, very good condition. One small chip at upper right edge- see photo. Glass, foils, hinges, etc are all excellent.
