Offering this scarce, late-Victorian deluxe souvenir booklet, "Photographic View Album of Dumfries and District," published by the famous photography firm Valentine & Sons in Dundee, Scotland, n.d., circa 1890. Thin, black textured leatherette (embossed paper) boards, oblong quarto (size about 10x7 inches), with gilt stamped lettering and elegant floral design on the front, unpaginated, with two pages of notes following all the photographs. Laid in is an unmarked photo of a house, presumably in the region. This is a premium, expanded edition featuring 64 sharp historic views of Dumfriesshire. Pages are a mix of full-page and two-per-page photographs, offering an incredible window into the architecture, landmarks, and daily scenes of the region during the height of Victorian Scottish tourism.
Overall condition is Very Good. Binding with original staples is secure. Cover boards show wear, especially at the edges, with some loss of the thin black embossed paper, exposing boards. There is also a scratch across the work "Souvenir." There is foxing the the endpapers, else the photo pages themselves are clean and bright. Pages have no writing, no tears or creases. A very nice collection of antique images!
