Description
Original 1876 Victorian Holy Bible — British & Foreign Bible Society
A genuine 150-year-old Victorian Holy Bible, dated 1876, retaining its original black binding and considerable evidence of its long family history.
The title page reads:
The Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments
Printed in London by George E. Eyre and William Spottiswoode, Printers to the Queen’s Most Excellent Majesty, for the British and Foreign Bible Society.
The Roman numeral date printed on the title page is M.DCCC.LXXVI — 1876.
Particularly Interesting Features
This is much more than an anonymous antique Bible.
Inside the front of the book is an old presentation inscription apparently recording that the Bible was presented to its recipient by his children on 27 October for his 45th birthday.
Several handwritten family dates are also present.
Remarkably, an old embroidered textile bookmark reading “New Years Wishes” remains inside the Bible and will be included exactly as found.
Together these features give the volume considerable period character and make it particularly interesting as an example of a Victorian family Bible that was clearly owned and used over generations.

Condition — Please Read Carefully
Poor antiquarian condition.
This Bible is approximately 150 years old and shows substantial age, use and deterioration.
The binding is heavily worn, rubbed and damaged, particularly around the spine and corners.
There is substantial deterioration around the hinges and the binding/boards are loose and partially detached.
There is extensive age-related foxing, staining, spotting and discolouration throughout.
Some pages have tears, creases, edge damage and other signs of prolonged use.
There are old handwritten inscriptions and family dates internally.
No claim is made that every page is present. The book has not been individually collated page-by-page and is therefore sold as an antiquarian volume in the condition shown.
Please examine all photographs carefully before bidding. They deliberately document the substantial wear as well as the book’s historical character and form an important part of the description.
The embroidered antique bookmark shown in the photographs is included with the Bible.
Despite its condition, this remains an atmospheric surviving Victorian Bible dated 1876, with genuine family provenance and an unusual piece of period textile ephemera still accompanying it.
Suitable for collectors of antique Bibles, Victorian books, religious history, genealogy, family history and nineteenth-century ephemera.
