Finally! The original Basil Poledouris masterpiece expanded on CD. Conan The Destroyer sees Arnold Schwarzenegger reprise his role from the 1982 box office hit, with Richard Fleischer directing, Raffaella De Laurentiis producing and Stanley Mann scripting from Robert E. Howard’s literary creation.
Surrounding Conan in this second adventure are Mako, Grace Jones, Wilt Chamberlain, Tracey Walter, Olivia d’Abo and Sarah Douglas. Queen Taramis offers Conan a quest, promising to resurrect his beloved Valeria in return for his cooperation. What follows is a journey filled with battles, sorcery, ancient relics and richly colourful material for Poledouris to score.
This world premiere expanded release took years of complicated licensing negotiations to complete. The original 1984 MCA album offered just 33 minutes of highlights, while this remastered edition expands the score to nearly an hour and adds a further 16 minutes of alternates. The original performance by the Union Musicisti di Roma, conducted by Poledouris, is presented from stunning 3-channel stereo session mixes vaulted by Universal.
Thematic ideas from the first film make a necessary appearance, while Conan himself receives an all-new syncopated theme, usually played on trumpets and heard throughout the score. Highlights include Chamber Of Mirrors, Dagoth Ceremony/Impaling The Grand Vizier, Net Fight and Cutlery Interruptus. The release also includes both original and revised versions of the Main Title, plus the complete original 1984 MCA soundtrack album on the second disc.
Artwork by Stéphane Coëdel features on the front of the flipper-style booklet, with the original MCA cover artwork on the reverse. Package design by Kay Marshall includes colour stills from the film and informative notes from John Takis. Antonio Rampotti records and mixes, Greig McRitchie, Jack & Scott Smalley orchestrate, Union Musicisti di Roma perform, and Basil Poledouris composes and conducts.
