Original vintage postcard featuring the Hotel Oregon in Portland, Oregon, mailed in 1929 from Oak Grove, Clackamas County, Oregon.

The front shows a colorful street-level view of the large Hotel Oregon, with early automobiles, pedestrians, American flags and the hotel's prominent rooftop and street signage. Printed caption reads:

“8664. Hotel Oregon, Portland, Ore.”

The reverse contains a handwritten message addressed to Mr. Sam Kern in Vancouver, Washington, and retains its original 1¢ green Benjamin Franklin stamp.

Of particular interest to postal-history collectors is the clear OAK GROVE / OREG. circular postmark dated:

NOV 13
1929

Oak Grove, Oregon Postal History

Oak Grove is a community in Clackamas County, Oregon, south of Portland.

The postal-history reference accompanying this card records the standalone Oak Grove post office as operating from 1907 until 1962. In 1962, the listing changes to Oak Grove Branch, which continues thereafter.

Thus, this 1929 postcard was mailed during the period when Oak Grove operated under its own post-office designation, more than three decades before that designation ended.

For DPO and Oregon postal-history collectors, the Oak Grove, Oreg. cancellation is considerably more interesting than the Portland scene alone might suggest.
