Antique early 20th-century postcard showing Place Bresson and the Théâtre Municipal in Algiers, Algeria, during the period of French colonial rule.

The front is captioned:

“499 ALGER. Le Théâtre et la Place Bresson”

The image provides an excellent elevated view of central Algiers, showing the ornate theater, Place Bresson, surrounding buildings, street activity, palms, and the hills rising behind the city.

Place Bresson was an important public square in colonial-era Algiers, situated between the theater and Boulevard de la République. Period descriptions note its prominent location overlooking the sea and harbor.

The subject is well documented in surviving period postcards; the Getty Research Institute collection includes historic postcard views specifically identified as “Algiers, Place Bresson and Theater.”

The divided-back postcard is unused and unposted. There is some handwritten collector/dealer notation on the address side.
