Description: Rebel Starfighter Prime is a spectacular and unusual heirloom tomato developed by Russ Crowe. The medium to large heart-shaped fruits have a deep red-purple skin with very dark shoulders and striking radial stripes running from the stem to the blossom end.
Inside, the fruits have dense, meaty red-brown flesh and a deep, rich flavour with a distinctive umami character. The plants are indeterminate, vigorous and productive from mid-season onwards, making this an excellent choice for gardeners who love unusual tomatoes with both exceptional looks and flavour.
How to Plant:
1. Start Indoors: Sow seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost date in your area. 2. Soil: Use light, well-draining seed-starting mix. Plant seeds 0.5 cm (¼ inch) deep. 3. Light & Heat: Keep soil warm (21–27°C / 70–80°F). Provide strong light or a sunny windowsill. 4. Water: Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy. 5. Transplanting: Harden off seedlings and transplant outdoors after all danger of frost has passed. Space plants 60–90 cm (24–36 in) apart. 6. Care: Stake or cage plants as they grow. Water regularly at the base and mulch to retain moisture. Begin fertilizing when the first flower truss has set fruit, which is when small green fruits are visible on the first cluster. 7. Harvest: Pick when fully coloured and slightly soft to the touch.
Tip: Watch the colour carefully as the fruit ripens — the combination of dark shoulders and dramatic striping makes this variety especially beautiful when fully mature.
