Oaxaca Barro Negro Black Clay Church Cathedral

Selling a substantial Oaxacan barro negro church sculpture, combining one of Mexico’s most distinctive ceramic traditions with an unusually architectural folk-art form. We believe this piece to be from the early to mid 20th century.

Crafted in Oaxaca, Mexico, the sculpture depicts a church or cathedral with twin bell towers, a deeply recessed central archway, and a raised central structure surmounted by a cross. Incised geometric patterns decorate both towers, with additional hand-worked detailing framing the façade and arched entrance.

The construction is notably dimensional. The main doorway opens directly into the hollow interior of the church, while the twin bell towers are likewise hollow and visible through their open structural sections. At nearly three pounds despite standing only 8 inches tall, the sculpture has considerable weight and physical presence.

Barro negro, literally “black clay,” is among Oaxaca’s most celebrated pottery traditions and is particularly associated with the pottery community of San Bartolo Coyotepec. The tradition reaches back approximately 2,500 years. During firing, heat, smoke, and carbonization transform the regional clay into the characteristic deep gray and black coloration for which barro negro is known.

Ancient Zapotec folklore has poetically referred to barro negro as “pottery of the night,” an especially fitting description for the deep black and graphite-like surfaces produced by this remarkable ceramic tradition.

This example displays a richly dark, subtly lustrous surface that shifts from black to graphite-like highlights under direct light, emphasizing the hand-modeled construction and deeply incised decoration.

The intentionally canted cross is a characteristic feature seen on many Oaxacan barro negro church and cathedral sculptures. Makers employ a variety of construction methods to preserve the angled position, including fired-in-place supports and fixed wire mounts such as the one used on this example.
