Handcrafted by Death Studios, this original Cerebus mask represents one of the studio’s classic monster designs. Sculpted by John Smith and Harry Inman, Cerebus debuted in the 1993 Death Studios catalog and has remained a recognizable design among collectors of independent horror masks.

Unlike mass-produced commercial Halloween masks, Death Studios masks are individually hand cast and hand painted. As part of our research, we contacted Death Studios directly regarding vintage production practices. Jeff Death confirmed that standard production masks generally were not individually dated or marked, and that production dates cannot reliably be determined from photographs alone. Identification therefore relies on the sculpt, paint scheme, catalog references, construction, and overall craftsmanship.

Cerebus is instantly recognizable by its oversized pointed ears, deeply wrinkled brow, pronounced cleft chin, elongated facial structure, and wide mouth filled with sharp, needle-like teeth. This example features a striking green paint variation that gives the sculpt an especially dramatic appearance.

This example is a wearable version of the Cerebus mask, retaining openings at the eyes for vision as well as openings at the nose and mouth for breathing and ventilation.

The interior construction displays characteristics associated with handmade latex production, including irregular casting texture, drips, and small bubbles rather than the uniform interior commonly seen on mass-produced factory masks.

Condition

Very good vintage condition overall.

The latex remains thick and flexible with strong sculpt definition and attractive original paint. No latex residue transferred during normal inspection or handling.

There is age-related cracking along portions of the ears, as clearly shown in the photographs. No repair or restoration has been attempted by HorrorCurator; we prefer to preserve the mask in its existing vintage condition rather than alter the original material or finish.

The mask arrived compressed from long-term storage and was carefully supported with acid-free tissue and placed on a display stand to allow the latex to naturally regain its intended shape.

Please review all photographs carefully, including the close-up photographs of the ears and interior, as they form an important part of the condition description. The mask pictured is the exact example the buyer will receive.
