I am pleased to offer a remarkable original postcard showing the White Star Liner Titanic just days before her launch in the Great Gantry at Harland and Woolf. In this sharp picture dating to late May 1911, you can see her pristine hull is set for the occasion on the 31st. At the end of the slipway, a temporary cofferdam has yet to be removed - this served to keep the ship's stern in a dry dock state so that work could continue. This is a pre sinking card dating to 1911 by local publisher Hurst of Belfast. Other postcards were produced showing this view, some of them later and some without Titanic being named- perhaps to avoid recalling the terrible disaster. Thr sail boat in the foreground provides interesting context. A few days after this photo was taken, builder Lord Pirrie and managing director Bruce Ismay would be among the expectant crowd to witness Titanic's launch into the River Lagan. Thanks for looking.
