Petroleum Center ~~ United States Hotel
Petroleum Center (often spelled Petroleum Centre) was one of the most famous boomtowns born out of America's first oil rush in Venango County, Pennsylvania.
The Oil Boom Town: Founded in 1866 on the George Washington McClintock farm, Petroleum Center grew practically overnight into a bustling town of over 3,000 residents.
The "U.S. Hotel": During the height of the oil rush, room and board were as valuable as crude oil. The U.S. Hotel was one of the local establishments providing lodging to incoming oilmen, speculators, and teamsters navigating the busy valley along Oil Creek.
Ghost Town Today: Like many rapid 19th-century boomtowns, once the local wells dried up around 1873, the population plummeted. Today, Petroleum Center is mostly deserted and is preserved as part of Oil Creek State Park.
