Rare Unofficial Royal Navy HMS Hercules Solid Brass Badge (c.1910-21)

HMS Hercules was one of two Colossus class super dreadnought battleships built for the RN, commissioned in 1910. She spent her whole career assigned to the Home and Grand Fleets, often serving as a flagship. She participated in the Battle of Jutland engaging & successfully returning fire at German ships SMS Wiesbaden (light Cruiser), SMS Seydlitz (Battlecruiser) and a German Dreadnought.

She was present at Rosyth, Scotland, when the German fleet surrendered on 21 November 1918, and was then detached to take the Allied Naval Armistice Commission to Kiel, Germany.

After the war she was deemed obsolete and was sold to be scrapped in Kiel in 1922.

The solid brass unofficial badge is mounted on a 10.5” x 7” teak plaque and is in fine fettle. The Admiralty finally authorised an offical badge for the name in 1945 when the aircraft carrier of the same name was commissioned.
