No other vulture can match the king's bright

colors. And few can match its size. It soars

over Central and South American forests on

wings that reach five feet from tip to tip. Like

other vultures, the king searches for dead

animals with its sharp eyes. But it is also an

expert at finding food by smell.

Tufted puffins get to wear their colors only

part of the year. At mating time each spring

they grow thick, colorful coverings on their

beaks and white feathers on their heads. Then

in the fall they shed their colors and return

to sea off the coasts of Alaska and Siberia,

where they dive for fish.
