KATHRYN WHITE: She made a name for herself in Hollywood
as a newspaper woman and as movie publicist before she
began to write fiction. Then as the editor of a fan magazine.
One torrid August day she waved Farewell to All That from
the deck of a freighter headed for pre-revolutionary Spain.
In that then-languorous country, she remembered only faintly
the brisk click of office time-clocks, but knew very clearly she
did not want that memory refreshed. And so she turned to
writing short stories. They sold and her career was charted.
Because she was born in Denver and delights especially
in Colorado summers, she established her home in that
Western city. But she comes to New York for long visits dur-
ing the winter months. She likes tolerant people and sunsets,
cats and dogs and gardens which yield superb cabbages.
Smugness and yodelers and codfish cakes head her list of
"Things I Do Not Like." She will be forever seeking more
glorious sundowns-preferably seen from a roving ship's
bow and material for stories. "Women Need Love" is her
first novel. McCall's offers you this moving drama of human
lives in its entirety - in this, the March issue.
