The General Services Administration (GSA) became responsible for one of the most remarkable discoveries in U.S. numismatic history when it uncovered millions of uncirculated Morgan Silver Dollars stored in U.S. Treasury vaults during the 1960s. Most of these coins were minted at the Carson City Mint between 1878 and 1893 and had remained untouched for decades. Beginning in 1972, the GSA offered the coins for sale to the public through a series of mail-bid auctions, each housed in a distinctive black hard-plastic display case with a certificate of authenticity. Today, GSA Morgan Silver Dollars are highly sought after by collectors for their exceptional preservation, original government packaging, and direct connection to this historic U.S. Treasury release.
