An exceptionally large wheel-thrown 19th century terracotta jug characteristic of Soufflenheim pottery in Alsace, eastern France. With a capacity of 4 litres (just over one US gallon), the size suggests it was for storing milk or cream in the dairy or farmhouse, rather than an everyday kitchen or table jug. The hand-applied slip decoration on the glazed mustard colour - confident motifs in brown and green - is typical of this regional style. Entirely handmade by a skilled local potter, the pitcher stands 23cm (9in) high with a top diameter of 18cm (just over 7in). The maximum width, handle to handle, is 24cm (9.4in). A serious collector's piece or a stunning decorative piece of art pottery, and with all the hallmarks of use and wear you'd want from a household item of this age but with no major chips or cracks. Watertight. Weighs 1.66kg (3.65lb).
