In a harder to find soft raspberry-pink transferware, this gorgeous Sarreguemines shallow soup bowl has aged beautifully since it was made in the late 19th or early 20th century. The pattern is Jardiniere. The condition is good with no chips or cracks, with just the fabulous patina of age. Measures 26cm (10.2in) across.
A little history: Sarreguemines is one of the great names in French ceramics, founded in 1790 in the Lorraine town of the same name, near the German border. Under the direction of the Utzschneider family from the early 19th century, the factory grew into one of France's largest producers of faience and transferware, known for combining English-style printed decoration with distinctly French patterns and forms. By the late 19th century it was producing everything from everyday tableware to elaborate decorative pieces, and its wares were exported widely.
