The FD55mm f/1.2 was introduced in May 1971, replacing the FL55mm f/1.2 (introduced in July 1968) and becoming the flagship of Canon's large-aperture lenses for SLRs.
Large-aperture standard lenses have become the most popular all-purpose lenses for general photography, including landscapes, sports, portraits and close-ups. However, as with the FL50mm F1.4II (released in May 1968), Canon has made significant progress in performance at maximum aperture as a result of many years of research and development.
By using seven elements in five groups, four of which are new types of glass, the lens eliminates high-order spherical aberration and image plane curvature.
This is the legendary Canon FD 55mm F1.2 Chrome Nose, an early chrome-ring version featuring the highly sought-after "O" engraving on the rear mount, identifying it as one of the earliest production examples. These first-generation lenses are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

■ Condition:
EXCELLENT - Pre-owned, minimal signs of use.
■ Appearance:
The lens is in excellent cosmetic condition with very little sign of use.
No noticeable scratches, dents, chips, or brass exposure.
Only a few light marks on the aperture ring.
Filter threads are clean with no signs of damage or excessive wear.
The focusing grip remains in excellent condition with almost no fading or wear.
The mount is clean with only minimal signs of use.
■ Optics:
Under normal viewing conditions, the optics appear clear.
When inspected with a strong LED flashlight, there is very slight, thin haze visible on the middle and rear elements.
No fungus. No significant scratches. No separation.
The haze is minor and difficult to notice under ordinary lighting.
■ Image Quality Test
I tested this lens on a Sony mirrorless camera using a mount adapter.
The famous rendering of the FD 55mm F1.2 is fully preserved, producing beautiful shallow depth of field and its characteristic vintage atmosphere.
In my testing, the slight haze had little to no visible effect on normal photographs, with no noticeable loss of contrast or washed-out appearance under typical shooting conditions.
Under strong backlighting, the large-aperture optics produce beautiful vintage flare and ghosting. Combined with the slight haze, the lens creates an exceptionally soft glow that modern lenses simply cannot replicate, resulting in warm, emotional images with a unique vintage character.
It is an outstanding choice for portraits and photographers seeking the classic old-lens aesthetic.

Aperture blades operate smoothly and are free of oil.
Focusing helicoid turns smoothly with excellent damping.
All functions operate properly.
