For sale: A superb antique Chinese Fuzhou bodiless lacquer bowl (Tuotai) – a masterpiece of traditional Fujian lacquer craft, dating to the early 20th century (c.1910–1940).
Craft & Material:
• Made using the rare “bodiless” technique: layers of hemp cloth and lacquer are built up then the core removed, leaving an ultra‑light, thin‑walled vessel – weighing only 43.3g
• Exterior finished in rich gold lacquer, hand‑painted with fine landscape scenes: willows, pavilions, a pagoda, and a figure boating on the river
• Interior base painted with a lively goldfish among waterweed – a classic symbol of abundance and prosperity
📐 Dimensions: 11.5 cm diameter, 5.7 cm height
Condition:
• Original and unrestored; vivid hand‑painted details remain clear
• Age‑related wear: faint hairline crack to the rim, small chip to the foot rim – all stable and consistent with its age
• No major damage, repainting or restoration
A fine example of one of China’s most famous lacquer traditions, highly collectible and perfect for display.
