My estimate: VF-30 to EF-40, with a lean toward EF details.

Obverse

• Victoria's portrait remains strong.
• Major hair details, ribbon, and crown are clearly visible.
• The legends are bold and complete.
• Moderate wear is present on the highest points of the hair and cheek.
• Rim beads are strong and nearly complete.

Reverse

• Maple leaves show substantial detail.
• Veins remain visible on many leaves.
• Crown is well defined.
• Wreath is sharp and attractive.
• The denomination and date are fully bold.
• Only moderate wear on the highest leaf surfaces.

Eye Appeal

This coin has considerably better eye appeal than the average circulated 1885 quarter because:

• The strike appears reasonably sharp.
• Surfaces are original-looking.
• No significant scratches, rim damage, or cleaning hairlines are evident from the photos.
• The reverse is especially attractive.

Straight Top 5

The date close-up shows the Straight Top 5 variety, the scarcer of the two 1885 date styles and the one most collectors seek.
