The Wahaika is one of the many forms of fighting club used by Maori warriors and was reserved for only the highest ranking and most respected fighters. It is often given as a ceremonial piece on special occasions. These Wahaika Maori Patu weapons were crafted using durable resin and purchased by the seller in Christchurch New Zealand in 1995. They seem to be made from a mould.
Both are 34cm long by 14cm wide.
The grey Patu is a replica of a weapon on display in the Canterbury Museum for natural and human history in Christchurch. The original version of was made by ancient polynesian explorers and is made of whale bone. The brown and white Patu is representative of modern Maori peoples, with more highly carved design, often made from local wood.
Both were formidable fighting weapons.
The brown and white Patu has been chipped on one side, otherwise in very good condition. The grey Patu is in very good condition.
The seller is moving into the final stage of life and is now letting go of beautiful pieces from his travels such as these.
