Mikhail Vrubel (1856-1910) 

Icon blends traditional Orthodox iconography with Vrubel’s expressive, symbolic, and heavily stylized Art Nouveau approach. While completing the commission in Kyiv, Vrubel utilized real-life figures as the models for his religious figures.

 The face of the Virgin Mary was modeled after Emilia Prakhova, the wife of art historian Adrian Prakhov. The infant Christ was modeled after their youngest daughter, Olga.
