Marchant Bros.
Metal and Wood Pinwheel Arithmometer
Early 20th Century, Patented 1911

This antique mechanical calculator was manufactured by Marchant Bros. in Oakland, California, following their 1911 patent. As an early pinwheel arithmometer, it represents a significant era in the history of computing technology before the advent of electronic calculators. The device features a robust metal housing with manual sliders and a hand-crank operation, all mounted on its original quartersawn oak wooden base.

• "The Marchant" nameplate identifies manufacturer as Marchant Bros. of Oakland, CA
• Stamped patent date of June 6, 1911, on the main identification plate
• Features manual pinwheel mechanism with hand-turned wooden handle crank
• Approximately 16" wide x 9" deep x 6" high; weighs 13 pounds

Condition: Fair to good antique condition with significant signs of age and use. The metal casing shows extensive surface oxidation, finish loss, and a heavy natural patina consistent with a century of storage. The wooden base exhibits surface scratches and wear to the finish but remains structurally sound. All mechanical sliders and the carriage appear to be present; however, full mechanical functionality has not been tested. The wooden crank handle is intact.
