Relisted at reduced starting price
Let down at last moment with sale .
1972 Triumph gt6 MK3 I purchased this car unseen on description and it didn't disappoint .
The business seller said it had been tested around the farm , it didn't over heat , it had good oil pressure and overdrive looked to be working I paid very good money and took a chance . It was in very good condition in need of some love and care . It had undergone a full restoration a few years back ( file of restoration photos included) when a lady threw a lot of money into it to have the car she always wanted . It was showing signs of age needing improving , but ran lovely .
I had it delivered and I was pleasantly surprised with the car having looked at quite a few that were more money and basically non runners full of rust.
I took the car straight out and indeed it does drive lovely and surprisingly very economical .
Overdrive , switch on gear knob worked in 3rd and 4th giving you 5th and 6th and makes a huge difference . However I noticed a small shock on steering wheel whilst engaging overdrive . I suspected a failing solonoid so I removed the gear box installed a new one with silicone wires and it's now perfect . Whilst out I changed the clutch kit for peace of mind and changed gear box oil making a small access hole in the tunnel to make further changes easier. ( The video on the listing you can hear overdrive kicking in 3/4th sorry about quality )
I wanted to change the gearstick bushings to make gear changes better and secure reverse spring but didn't have tool to remove gear knob so easy job for new owner. A new rubber cover would be nice when on there .
The ride was quite bumpy on receipt so I changed the front shocks and I also changed the track rod ends due to deteriorated rubbers . The rear passenger side has a slight knock so assume rear shocks need replacing .
I've now done about 600 faultless miles which can be seen on odometer , my normal run is around the Brecon beacons about a 60 mile round trip and the temp gauge never rises higher than just half way . The last photograph of the car was taken last weekend by motorphoto on roadside.
Under the bonnet I think in the past it had a temperature controlled engine fan you can see the wires to fit a new one and are still there , however in the past a radiator fan has been installed which runs off a two speed switch on the dash slow and fast. I must say we are into our second heatwave in Wales and I've never had to use it . Also another preventative measure has been installed under the bonnet in the form of an expansion tank which is higher than the rad a nice upgrade also . If you wanted to revert back to automatic fan all wires are there . The wires around rad fan and washer jets need a bit of tidying up .
The gt6 has electronic ignition , starts brilliant hot or cold ( manual choke ) and as I've said very economical compared to my 1600 escort . The distributor body looks a little rough and perhaps could do with replacing but just superficial.
Oil pressure is fantastic on start up its just below 80 Psi and fluctuates as should when warm .
Mechanically the engine is fantastic. It has very good oil pressure and pulls like a train no flat spots , the noise is fantastic .
Gear box is great changing well in all gears . Handbrake could do with tightening . Brakes are good .
I removed the fuel pump and I rebuilt it using a modern diaphragm.
I've taken a look underneath and the chassis and outriggers are very very good , could do with a clean up in one or two places . It looks to have original floor plans ,driver side has had a couple of patches but looks very good and strong .
Carpets are good but could do with a clean . The seats installed are from a mx5 comfortable and practical and look great .
The wooden dash looks a ' little' tired but not bad at all could do with a freshen up in time .
The gt6 has five nearly new yokomo tyres I believe great tread .
The gauges all work apart from the amp meter ,I believe back in the day a lot of voltage went through here and caused fires ,this has been disconnected it would be nice to replace this with a 12 volt guage perhaps.
Petrol guage works fine , as well as temp guage and oil pressure . Speedo and rev counter works as should .
The heater fan works on both speeds by pulling on the heater knob . I flushed out the heater matrix and a lot of gunk came out I replaced the water with new antifreeze but I was going to remove the temp housing as I think it might be blocked not a lot of heat being blown out.
Out of caution as I said previously the car runs fantastic and doesn't overheat , I did a compression test and every cylinder was in the region of 155 psi which is a fantastic reading and somewhat confirms the low mileage of the engine .
I was going to check the tappets but haven't got around to it yet , it may be useful to remove the rockers and check the torque on the bolts ,apparently oil seepage from that side of head is normal mine seems to have a little wetness coming from that area but it's not losing oil so perhaps something to do for the future.
I have removed the two parcel trays to look at wiring ,which are made from card board il put them in the boot . The windscreen wipers work from original switch. The washers work from a separate switch by the rad fan .One wire was lose by fan switch . It's from the courtesy switch on door . The light on the dash has been wired to it ,it was working but now doesn't .the tailgate courtesy light doesn't work also . I think it has something to do with the radio . Its just a wrong connection somewhere . When you indicate it switches off the radio ,something simple .
The radio itself needs securing it's one of those cheap Chinese imports but tbh is fantastic pics up radio , aux and Bluetooth you can even make receive telephone calls on it . Just don't indicate lol ( until sorted )
The colour I love but there are one or two areas of the paint that could do with a little looking at , but no massive dents or rust patches just a little touch up here and there but nothing that needs doing immediately all the areas where they usually go is fantastic ,around the windows top of windscreen ,arches and around tale gate is solid just run as is and love it .it can be improved over time but it isn't concourse. The bonnet bulge had a bit of a chip where I think it was closed and hit a raised engine cover nut ??? It has been done but could be polished out /improved .
I have a file of old Mots and a bit of paperwork along with previous restoration photos and info. The car has hardly been used but was kept undercover I don't think there are many gt6s with this mileage about .
I have advertised the gt6 fairly it seems fairly poor ones go from £7000 up to £20+ for sorted models . This is your chance of an affordable good-looking and running classic . The poor man's e type which will only continue to rise in price .
I'm selling because I've purchased a 205 GTi which needs a bit of work I need the funds and the space so someone will have the opportunity to run and improve this little beauty . It really turns heads
I only ask please don't mess me around I've had a nightmare on here in the past .I am genuine and If you have any questions il gladly help . But if you buy the gt6 I would need a deposit of £200 on completion of sale with the full balance to be paid before car leaves me . Money preferred to be paid by bank transfer.
I do know of a reputable car transporter if required let me know if you need a price for transportation . . I have a few classics and I need to make space . Also I have a pair of gt6 black vinyl seats in great condition with runners that I would be happy to include if I get what id be happy with .A set similar is on sale at the moment for £800.
