Kendall Motor Oil was founded in 1881 in Bradford, Pennsylvania, by entrepreneurs William Willis, E.R. Loomis, and R.H. Childs, who established the Bradford Oil Refinery near Kendall Creek.  The brand faced early bankruptcy and legal challenges from competitor Lewis Emery, but was saved in 1902 when Penn Lubricating Co. purchased the refinery and appointed Otto Koch as manager. 

Under Koch’s leadership, Kendall became the first refiner to offer motor oil good for 2,000 miles (introducing the iconic two-finger logo in 1928) and the first to nationally market motor oil in quart cans (1933).  The company pioneered several industry firsts, including SAE 10W-30 oil (1953) and specialized racing oils for motorcycles and sports cars (1960s). 

Ownership of the brand shifted over the decades: Witco Chemical acquired the refinery in 1966, selling the Kendall name to ConocoPhillips (via Sunoco) in 1997, while the Bradford Refinery itself was sold to American Refining Group (now making Brad Penn oil).  Today, the brand is distributed by Petroleum Service Company, continuing its legacy as one of the oldest lubricant brands in the world.
