Dated November 22, 1951, this handbill advertises a “Real Jazz Concert” in Newark, New Jersey, presented by Bernice Sanders and headlined by renowned trombonist Vic Dickenson. Widely admired for his warm tone, expressive style, and subtle humor, Dickenson was among the most distinctive trombonists of the swing era, performing with such notable figures as Count Basie, Sidney Bechet, and Louis Armstrong.
The concert was organized by Bernice Sanders, a Newark-based promoter and advocate for jazz who helped bring leading performers to local audiences during a period when independent promoters played a vital role in sustaining live music. As such, the handbill documents not only an appearance by a celebrated musician but also the efforts of a community organizer whose work contributed to the cultural life of mid-century Newark. The handbill measures 9” x 5 13/16” and has a total of 24 pages.
