Up for sale is an exquisite antique Japanese Samurai Menpo (half-face mask) dating back to the Meiji Period (1868–1912).
During the Meiji era, as the samurai class dissolved, traditional armorers transitioned their master craftsmanship from battlefield utility to creating high-end decorative art for international collectors and noble estates. This particular piece is a phenomenal example of that era's artistic revival, boasting incredible metalwork and lacquer detailing.
It features the classic fierce Ressei (烈势) expression to ward off evil and intimidate onlookers, complete with a functional, detachable nose piece (Kiri-bana / 切鼻) and a multi-layered throat guard (Yodarekake / 垂).
- Meiji Period Artistry: A true bridge between feudal martial function and fine art. The facial wrinkles and expressions are deeply and dynamically forged, showcasing the high-level craftsmanship of the late 19th to early 20th century.
- Detachable Nose (Kiri-bana): The upper lip and nose piece can be seamlessly detached via side slots. This intricate mechanical fit is tight and well-preserved.
- Traditional Lacquer Work: The exterior features a rich, glossy black lacquer finish (Kuro-urushi), while the interior and open mouth are lined with vibrant vermilion red lacquer (Shu-urushi).
- Authentic Details: Adorned with a fierce mustache made of natural hair and features dual Ori-kugi (metal pegs) on the cheeks.
