The cream-painted pressed steel case with chrome-edged bezel retains its original dial, with bold Arabic numerals and baton minute markers in the utilitarian style characteristic of French public buildings of the mid-20th century — schools, hospitals, railway stations, and government offices. Sourced in SW France, this is a beautiful timepiece from a different era from a renowned French clockmaker. The clock measures 36cm diameter and 10cm depth. The weight is 3kg. ABOUT THE MAKER
The house of Lepaute was founded in Paris in 1750 by brothers Jean-André and Jean-Baptiste Lepaute, appointed Horlogers du Roi — Clockmakers to the King. Over more than a century, successive generations supplied clocks to the Louvre, the Tuileries, and the great public buildings of Paris. By the 20th century the firm had become the leading manufacturer of French institutional and public clocks, their movements found in schools, mairies, hospitals, and stations across France.
