Gold plate, antique, pocket watch fob, 3 3/8" long x 3/4" wide + 5.5" watch chain, from the Bates & Bacon company, which is clearly marked on the "lobster claw" watch clip at the end of the watch chain. The pocket clip is marked PAT 9 22 03 (for patented Sept. 22, 1903), although the marking is well worn. No markings as to materials or year. The only magnetic part is the watch clip. The front side and the back side are identical (see photos) except for the pocket clip.
Again, the seal hanging at bottom is blank on its face, so it's just waiting for your initial(s) or name(s). The seal may or may not be original to this watch fob; no evidence either way in my opinion. The watch chain also seems a little long for this watch fob....
This is a cute item, all parts present, all parts functional, in very good condition overall.
Bates & Bacon was founded 1867 (with roots back to 1857) by Joseph M. Bates and George M. Bacon in Attleboro, Massachusetts. It merged with the D.F. Briggs Co., also in Attleboro, in 1922 (though some sources say 1945) to become Briggs, Bates & Bacon.
I make no promises or guarantees about this description, but as a 27-year watch fob collector, I'm trying to describe each one I offer for sale as honestly and informatively as I can.
From my personal collection and it hasn’t been on the market since I bought it at some point during 2000-2010.
I bought it as a collectible and not for its possible metal content.
